For Adriano Gomes this award with the 'Torsten Carlius Fair Play Award' was more than just an honour for a fair play behaviour. The Portuguese (Benfica Lisbon) saw in this honour, an honour from his sporting life and a belated birthday present (on January 23, Adriano Gomes got 88 years old). 15 years old, Gomes started in athletics, due to professional reasons he was seven years without any competitions, but otherwise always active. In 1952, he was even qualified for the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 800 m and 1500 m he could not participate because the federation had no money. In Nyiregyháza (HUN) two times he was third, but because of the medal standards he did not get the medals. "An absolut correct decision", Adriano Gomes commentated this decision. Para Adriano Gomes o prémio 'Torsten Carlius Fair Play Award' foi mais do que apenas o reconhecimento de um comportamento honrado. O Português (Benfica, Lisboa) viu esta honra, como o reconhecimento da sua carreira desportiva e um presente de aniversário atrasado (em 23 de Janeiro, Adriano Gomes fez 88 anos). Aos 15 anos de idade, Adriano Gomes começou no atletismo, e apenas por razões profissionais esteve durante sete anos da sua vida sem praticar, de resto, esteve sempre activo até hoje. Em 1952, ele foi um dos 12 seleccionados para os Jogos Olímpicos de Helsínquia, em 800 e 1500m, mas acabou por não participar uma vez que o Comité Olímpico não teve dinheiro para enviar todos os atletas.
Em Nyiregyhaza (HUN), ele foi duas vezes terceiro, mas devido aos mínimos de classificação ele não conseguiu medalhas. "Uma decisão absolutamente correcta", comentou Adriano Gomes sobre esta decisão.

Für Adriano Gomes war diese Auszeichnung mit dem 'Torsten Carlius Fair Play Award' mehr als nur eine Ehrung für ein faires Verhalten. Der Portugiese von Benfica Lissabon sah in dieser Ehrung eine Ehrung seines Sportlebens und ein nachträgliches Geburtstagsgeschenk (am 23. Januar wurde Adriano Gomes 88 Jahre alt).
Mit 15 Jahren hatte Gomes mit der Leichtathletik begonnen, aus beruflichen Gründen sieben Jahre ohne Wettkampf, sonst aber immer aktiv. 1952 war er gar für die Olympischen Spiele in Helsinki über 800 m und 1500 m qualifiziert, konnte aber nicht teilnehmen, da der Verband kein Geld hatte.
In Nyíregyháza (HUN) wurde er zwei Mal Dritter, weil er aber den Medaillenstandard nicht hatte, bekam er auch keine Medaille ausgehändigt. "Eine absolut richtige Entscheidung", kommentierte Adriano Gomes diese Entscheidung.
